The cannabis industry is booming, and with it comes a growing opportunity for cannabis marketers to reach consumers on social media. In fact, a recent study by Headset found that cannabis consumers are more likely to use social media than the general population.
As a data-driven marketer with a background in digital advertising, I've helped many cannabis brands reach their target audiences on social media. In this blog post, I'll share my top tips for using social media to reach cannabis consumers.
Tip #1: Choose the Right Platforms

Not all social media platforms are created equal when it comes to reaching cannabis consumers. Some platforms, like Instagram and TikTok, are more permissive of cannabis content than others.
For example, Instagram prohibits the sale of illegal products, including cannabis. However, it does allow for cannabis advocacy and educational pages. This means that you can use Instagram to create content that educates consumers about the benefits of cannabis, but you can't promote your products or services for sale
TikTok is a newer platform that is more lenient about cannabis content. You can create videos that promote your products or services on TikTok, as long as you don't violate any of the platform's other policies, such as those related to hate speech or violence.
Twitter is a great platform for sharing news and updates about your brand, and for engaging in conversations with your customers. You can also use Twitter to run contests and giveaways.
Facebook: Facebook is still a popular platform for cannabis consumers, especially those who are older or more established. You can use Facebook to create groups and communities for your customers, and to run paid ads.
Here are some of the new policies that social media platforms have provided for the cannabis industry:
Meta: In July 2022, Meta announced that it would be updating its policy on cannabis advertising to allow for the promotion of CBD products that are certified by LegitScript and comply with all applicable local laws. Meta will also allow for the promotion of hemp products that don't contain CBD or >0.3% THC. However, Meta will still prohibit the promotion of THC products or cannabis products that contain psychoactive components.
Twitter: Twitter has also updated its policy on cannabis advertising to allow for the promotion of CBD products that are legal in the United States. However, Twitter will still prohibit the promotion of THC products or cannabis products that contain psychoactive components.
YouTube: YouTube has a long-standing policy of prohibiting the promotion of cannabis products. However, YouTube does allow for the promotion of educational content about cannabis, as long as it is not intended to promote the sale or use of cannabis products.
Snapchat: Snapchat has a similar policy to YouTube, in that it prohibits the promotion of cannabis products, but allows for the promotion of educational content about cannabis.
It's important to note that these policies are subject to change, so it's always best to check the latest policy for each social media platform before you start advertising your cannabis products.
In addition to these policies, there are a few other things to keep in mind when advertising cannabis products on social media:
Be clear about your target audience. Make sure that you're only targeting people who are in the legal age range for cannabis consumption in your jurisdiction.
Be honest and transparent about your products. Don't make any false or misleading claims about your products.
Use appropriate hashtags. When using hashtags, make sure that you're using hashtags that are relevant to your target audience and that are also allowed by the social media platform you're using.
Be respectful of others. Don't use language or images that could be offensive to others.
By following these tips, you can create effective social media campaigns for your cannabis products without violating any policies.
Tip #2: Use Relevant Hashtags

Hashtags are a great way to get your content seen by more people on social media. When you use relevant hashtags, your posts will show up in search results for those hashtags.
When using hashtags for cannabis marketing, it's important to use hashtags that are relevant to your target audience and that are also popular. You can use tools like Hashtagify or Ritetag to find popular hashtags related to cannabis.
For example, if you're a cannabis brand that sells CBD products, you might use hashtags like #cbd, #cbdoil, #cbdforpain, and #cbdforanxiety.
You can also use more general hashtags that are relevant to your target audience, such as #wellness, #health, #selfcare, and #lifestyle.
Be careful not to use too many hashtags, though. Instagram only allows you to use up to 30 hashtags per post, and using too many can make your post look spammy.
Finally, don't forget to update your hashtags regularly. The popularity of hashtags can change over time, so it's important to make sure that you're using hashtags that are still relevant.
Tip #3: Create Engaging Content

If you want people to engage with your social media content, you need to create content that they'll find interesting and engaging. This could include anything from educational posts to funny memes to product reviews.
The key is to create content that is relevant to your target audience and that speaks to their interests. You also need to make sure that your content is visually appealing and easy to read.
For example, you could create a series of educational posts about the different types of cannabis products and their benefits. You could also create funny memes about cannabis culture. Or, you could create product reviews that highlight the benefits of your products.
Here are some challenges in creating engaging content for cannabis consumers on social media:
The cannabis industry is still relatively new, and there is a lot of misinformation out there. It's important to create content that is accurate and informative, and that dispels any myths or misconceptions about cannabis.
Cannabis consumption is still illegal in many parts of the world. This means that you need to be careful about the content that you create, and that you avoid promoting your products to people who live in areas where cannabis is illegal.
Cannabis is a sensitive topic for some people. It's important to be respectful of others when creating content about cannabis, and to avoid using language or images that could be offensive.
Social media platforms have strict policies about cannabis content. It's important to be familiar with these policies and to avoid violating them.
Despite these challenges, it is possible to create engaging content for cannabis consumers on social media. Here are a few tips:
Focus on the benefits of cannabis. People are more likely to be interested in cannabis if they know how it can benefit them. Focus on the medicinal properties of cannabis, or how it can be used for relaxation or creativity.
Use humor and creativity. People are more likely to engage with content that is funny or creative. Use memes, GIFs, or videos to make your content more engaging.
Run contests and giveaways. People love free stuff! Run contests and giveaways to generate excitement and engagement around your brand.
Be consistent. The key to success on social media is to be consistent with your content. Post regularly and engage with your followers. The more you post, the more likely people are to see your content and engage with it.
Tip #4: Run Paid Ads

Paid advertising can be a great way to reach a wider audience on social media. When you run paid ads, you can target your ads to specific demographics, interests, and even past purchase behavior.
This means that you can be sure that your ads are seen by people who are actually interested in what you have to offer.
For example, you could run a paid ad that targets people who have expressed an interest in CBD products. You could also run a paid ad that targets people who live in a state where cannabis is legal.
Paid advertising can be a bit expensive, but it can be a very effective way to reach your target audience and drive sales.
Tip #5: Partner with Influencers

Partnering with influencers is another great way to reach a wider audience on social media. When you partner with an influencer, they will promote your products or services to their followers.
This can be a very effective way to reach a large audience of potential customers. However, it's important to choose influencers who are relevant to your target audience and who have a good reputation.
For example, you could partner with a cannabis blogger who has a large following of people who are interested in CBD products. Or, you could partner with a cannabis podcaster who has a large following of people who are interested in cannabis culture.
Here are some challenges that you may face when using these tips to reach cannabis consumers on social media:
